Our school breakfast programs have received a major boost with an $11,500 donation from the Devonport Toast for Kids gala dinner and 50 extra loaves of bread each week from Cripps Bakery.

About 250 people frocked-up and suited-up for the gala at the Paranaple Centre where guests had the chance to make a donation, bid for auction prizes and buy a beanie bear in support of more than a dozen school breakfast programs in the North West.

Devonport Chaplaincy oversees the programs in more than a dozen schools in Port Sorell, Latrobe, Sheffield and Devonport, feeding up to 1000 students a week. Loaves and Fishes supplements donated bread, milk, juice, Milo, cereal and fruit with muffins and pancake mix made in the Devonport kitchen.

Loaves and Fishes also supplies breakfast foods to an additional 50 schools throughout the State where teachers, volunteers, service clubs and chaplains ensure thousands of kids get a fresh start to the day.

About a third of Tasmanian children never get breakfast at home before class.

All the schools benefit from bread donations from Cripps, either directly from the bakery, or through our supermarket partnerships.

Cripps sales manager Scott Alexander said Cripps was delighted to be able to give back to those doing it tough through a partnership with Loaves and Fishes Tasmania.

Cripps supports may community initiatives including City Mission and the IGA Supermarkets community chest programs.

In return, Loaves and Fishes is helping to collect and return Cripps bread crates from supermarkets and partner agencies.

Cripps spends up to $20,000 a year on replacing lost, damaged or stolen crates.
