Trainee Ricky Applebee has grown in confidence and skill as a result of a traineeship in the Loaves and Fishes Devonport kitchen.

The 17-year-old is one of 10 trainees employed across the Loaves and Fishes kitchen, warehouses and front office.

Loaves and Fishes works closely with schools, employment agencies and youth services to identify students and unemployed young adults who would benefit from a traineeship.

Kitchen manager Pat O’Connell said Ricky was a “crucial member of the kitchen team.”

“He’s grown in leaps and bounds. It’s been amazing to see him grow in confidence, not just in regards to cooking skills and food appreciation, but with people.

“We are amazed at his attention-to-detail and his willingness to learn and improve his skills.”

Ricky said he took on the traineeship last year after visiting the kitchen on work experience from SPACE school in Devonport where he was in Year 10.

“It’s not too hectic and I like the work environment,” he said.

“Pat and Renee (kitchen managers) are good bosses and I like the people I work with.”

Ricky has been able to buy a car and is close to getting his driver’s licence.

He’s appreciative of the opportunity to get into the workforce and grow professionally and personally.
