As Christmas approaches, we reflect on a truth that underpins everything we do at Loaves and Fishes Tasmania: relationships, community, and connection are the foundation of meaningful impact.

Throughout the year, we’ve seen how even the smallest actions—a meal delivered to a food program, a moment of connection with a partner agency, or a box of fresh produce—can lead to extraordinary outcomes. These small, consistent efforts form the building blocks for the long-term change we strive for.

This year, as part of our commitment to fostering connection and resilience, we’re taking a different approach to Christmas.

A New Approach to Christmas

For many years, Christmas hampers have been an important part of our outreach, meeting real needs and bringing comfort to Tasmanians. We take a moment to honor the significance of these hampers and express gratitude to everyone who supported them.

However, we also recognise the growing challenge of social isolation—a need hampers alone cannot fully address. This year, Loaves and Fishes Tasmania is focusing on supporting selected Christmas lunches across the State. Our aim is to help bring people together, creating opportunities to share meals, strengthen relationships, and foster connection.

This initiative will not only serve hundreds, if not thousands, of people this Christmas but also allow our partner agencies to redirect resources to their vital, year-round work. It’s a shift that reflects our vision for the future: addressing immediate needs while building stronger, more connected communities.

Our Mandate: Small Is Beautiful

At Loaves and Fishes Tasmania, we champion a place-based, community-led approach to addressing social needs. Our philosophy is simple: small is beautiful. For us, “big” is about serving the small—helping communities, local programs, and individuals to function and thrive.

This focus is not just about meeting immediate needs; it’s about empowering communities to flourish in the long term. By valuing the small and local, we can create the deepest and most meaningful impact. It’s our mandate, and it’s what guides us as we look to 2025 and beyond. We are here to support you—to serve alongside you in building stronger, more resilient communities.

Building Resilience for the Future

This new approach to Christmas reflects our broader commitment to changing the face of food insecurity in Tasmania. By focusing on connection and collaboration, we’re planting seeds for long-term resilience—helping communities thrive not just during the holiday season but well into 2025 and beyond.

In the coming year, we will continue to expand partnerships with community agencies and food programs. Our work will ensure rescued food doesn’t just meet physical needs but becomes a tool for fostering connection and dignity. Together, we can build a future where food insecurity is addressed at its roots—not just as a matter of hunger but as an opportunity to inspire hope, inclusion, and strength.

The Power of Small Acts

From the tiniest seed grows the mightiest tree. This timeless truth teaches us that even small, seemingly insignificant gestures—when nurtured with care—can lead to profound change.

As the Bible says in Luke 16:10:

“Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much.”

Whether it’s a meal shared, a kind word spoken, or a relationship strengthened, these small acts are the foundation for something far greater. By nurturing these moments, we are helping to build a stronger, more connected Tasmania.

A Challenge for Christmas

As we celebrate this season of giving, we invite you to join us in focusing on the moments that truly matter:

  • Be present. Take time to connect deeply with someone in your life or community.
  • Be generous. A small act of kindness can make a lasting difference.
  • Be committed. Long-term change comes from consistent care for the people and communities around us.

At Loaves and Fishes Tasmania, we believe that when we nurture small, meaningful moments, the impact can grow beyond what we can imagine. As the saying goes, “Out of little things, big things grow.”

Thank You

To our community partners, agencies, and supporters: thank you for being part of this journey. Your collaboration and dedication have helped us provide thousands of meals and support programs that foster connection and hope across Tasmania. Together, we are addressing immediate needs while building the foundation for a future where food insecurity is met with dignity, innovation, and resilience.

From all of us at Loaves and Fishes Tasmania, we wish you a joyful and meaningful Christmas season, filled with connection, gratitude, and hope.

Here’s to working together in 2025 to serve the small and build communities where everyone can thrive.

From the Andrew and the Loaves and Fishes Tasmania team
