Hydro Tasmania is sponsoring a healthy breakfast for hundreds of students in six schools statewide in a tasty new partnership with Loaves and Fishes Tasmania.
Hydro Tasmania has donated $10,000 for use from next term (beginning July 25) in breakfast programs at Hillcrest Primary School, East Devonport Primary School, Waverley Primary School, Moonah Primary School, Jordan River Learning Federation JRLF – Herdsmans Cove Primary School, and Kingston Primary School.
Loaves and Fishes will use the generous gift over the next 12 months to supply a range of breakfast food from fruit, juice, milk, Milo and water to cereal, healthy pancake mix, and baked goods including muffins and frittatas.
School breakfast programs are held from one to five days a week depending on demand and availability of volunteers, including teachers, parents and school chaplains.
Inclusive breakfast program builds community
All students are invited to participate so as not to create stigma around the breakfast program.
Loaves and Fishes Tasmania supplies food to almost 60 schools statewide. The volume and type of food supplied depends largely on what has been donated and with what the organisation can afford to buy.
Loaves and Fishes general manager Aaaron Kropf said specific donations such as the grant from Hydro Tasmania meant the Devonport kitchen could budget reliably to supply a full range of breakfast options to hundreds of students.
Better, wider food options now available
“This grant, and the annual Toast 4 Kids charity ball in Devonport, together with fruit donations from Costa Berries have meant more students in more places have regular access to nutritious food.
“This also takes pressure off the family food budget.
“We commend Hydro Tasmania for stepping up and investing in the health and wellbeing of students.
“The programs are just as much about the social interaction between students and students and teachers and chaplains as they are about the food served.”
