Loaves and Fishes Tasmania will be able to deliver more food and hope to Tasmanians doing it tough as a result of extra State Government funding announced this week.
Loaves and Fishes was one of many community organisations that benefited from the $5 million cost-of-living booster package.
CEO Andrew Hillier said the latest $284,000 grant, together with other recent State Government funding, would be used to purchase new food collection and delivery vehicles and help cover other operating expenses associated with delivering bulk food statewide to 350 community partners.
“We have had ongoing discussions with the State Government about the incredible need in the community and our own considerable financial challenges in running an organisation established to serve others,” Andrew said.
“Our costs have increased 27 percent in the past 12 months as spiraling rent, food, fuel, and power costs also plunge a record number of Tasmanians into hardship.
“We could be delivering twice the amount of food we are.
“We are pleased that the Government has listened and responded so decisively during what are unprecedented and evolving times.
“We look forward to continuing to work with community organisations across the state to ensure we can address local needs with the amount and type of food they need, when they need it.”
Loaves and Fishes has a waiting list of agencies wanting food relief.
