Emergency Food Relief
We provide free emergency food relief to Tasmanians needing help.
We rescue and redistribute surplus and donated food, much of which would otherwise go to waste.
Food is supplied to more than 250 community partners as ready-to-eat meals, school breakfast supplies, made-to-order food hampers and fresh fruit and vegetables.
Our kitchens use donated food to produce tasty, nutritious ready-to-eat meals, from roasts and pastas, to curries and casseroles.
The kitchen also produces tasty school breakfast items, from muffins and frittatas, to pancake mix.
We don’t give food directly to individuals or families.
If contacted we can direct you to the closest food provider near you. (03) 6417 3131
Employment Pathways
Providing training, work experience and opportunities to volunteer are integral to our mission to deliver food and hope.
Both our Devonport and Hobart, kitchen and warehouse offer school-based and adult traineeships, including for those with disabilities, in areas such as warehousing, cooking, hospitality and administration.
We also provide training opportunities for the long term unemployed and those required to perform community service hours.
Many of those who get work experience with us go on to find employment at Loaves and Fishes or within the food, hospitality or related sectors.
School Lunch Program
Loaves and Fishes Tasmania is proud to partner with School Food Matters in a bold School Lunch Project, our kitchens now serving up healthy, nutritious meals to about 4000 students each week in 30 schools statewide.
The School Food Matters-inspired and led lunch pilot will serve up 160,000 meals throughout the 2023 school year in a partnership between schools, Loaves and Fishes and the State Government.
Social Enterprises
We partner with leading brands to produce food for-profit to fund our emergency food relief work.
For example, we harvest honey from North-West Tasmania and olives from Forth Valley to create quality raw unfiltered honey and extra virgin olive oil. We also make a healthy range of food options for school canteens.
These and other commercial partnerships help us become more financially sustainable and provide important training and employment opportunities.
